Rivers crisis not part of our duties –Dickson

AUGUST 1, 2013

Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Committee on Reconciliation, Mr. Seriake Dickson, has said resolving the crisis facing the party in Rivers State is not part of the duties of the committee.
Dickson, who is also the Bayelsa State Governor, stated this during a press conference in Abuja, on Wednesday.
He said the primary focus of the committee was to reconcile members in non-PDP states.
The governor also stated that the coast was clear for the mini-national convention, of the PDP as the committee had succeeded in appealing to party members, who went to court to stop the convention to withdraw their suit.
Answering questions from journalists during the press conference, he said, “It (Rivers PDP crisis) is not the duty of my committee, unless there is a specific referral from the national leadership. It is not our intention to go into Rivers scenario; reason being that we have so many matters in court and we have intervention by the National Assembly and there is an international dimension also coming up with people granting interviews to the international media.
“The only thing I can say is that Nigerians should pray for the mental stability of their leaders because it is part of what they owe us. They should pray that all those who take executive decisions should have stable mindset with which to do their jobs.”
He said the committees would reconcile all interest groups in the 13 non-PDP states so that the party would be stronger and more virile.
Dickson stated, “The focus of our mandate is essentially on non-PDP states; to reconcile various factions and stakeholders. That itself is very challenging. Those states are 13 in number.”
According to him, PDP states are outside the focus of the committee, adding that leaders of the party are working on those areas.
“Those (states) that have PDP governors present a different challenge. That is clearly outside the area of immediate focus of the committee,” he said.
The governor added that the committee had met with members of the party, who went to court to stop the planned mini-convention.
He stated, “We have recorded what I think is a success. They (the members) have been able to make a case and present their grievances to the reconciliation committee.”
According to him, the aggrieved members saw the need to voluntarily withdraw the action they filled in court.
Dickson claimed that the members saw that the reconciliation committee was determined to address their grievances.
He said a letter of withdrawal of the suit had already been written to the court, where the action was being heard.
The governor added, “I want to assure you that our reconciliation efforts have yielded some positive results within a short period, such that we have established the basis for the eventual withdrawal of the matter in court. The coast ought to be clear to take steps to organise the mini-convention.”
Dickson stated that the committee had issued a code of conduct to guide its members and promote their integrity.
