AUGUST 28, 2013
Screening of aspirants for national offices of the Peoples Democratic Party in the August 31 Special National Convention begins in Abuja on Wednesday (today).
Investigations by our correspondent showed that about 84 aspirants purchased nomination forms to contest for different 18 vacant positions in the party.
The screening committee, headed by Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), is expected to sit at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.
It is however not clear how the committee would handle the issue of zoning, which aspirants from the South-East geo-political zone have killed against.
Some of those angling to occupy the position of the PDP deputy national chairman are the party’s former National Organising Secretary, Prince Uche Secondus; immediate past Deputy National Chairman, Sam Jaja; Dr. Sylva Opusunju; and Senator Stella Omu and two other aspirants.
Those interested in becoming the National Secretary are former Minister of Transport, Chief Ebenezer Babatope; PDP Ondo State governorship candidate and former National Legal Adviser of PDP, Olusola Oke; former Minister of Information, Chief Dapo Sarumi, and former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran.
Contestants for the office of the National Organizing Secretary are Mustapha Abubakar and Sidi Ibrahim Bamali.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the PDP is set to discipline Senator Andy Uba and his brother, Chris, over their involvement in the conduct of parallel governorship primary in Anambra State on Saturday.
The party has already invited the two brothers and three other chieftains of the party from the state to appear before its National Working Committee to explain the roles they played during the parallel primary that produced Andy as the governorship candidate of the party in the state.
Mr. Tony Nwoye is the candidate recognised by the party.
