Council chairman points finger at Fulani herdsmen.
Six persons including a pregnant mother were on Thursday night reportedly attacked and killed in Bisichi, along Foron road in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The five men and one woman were said to be returning from a local market in Bukuru, Jos South LGA where they had gone to sell their farm produce.
The transitional chairman of Barkin Ladi, Emmanuel Loham, in an interview with newsmen, confirmed the attack, and revealed that the victims were attacked by gunmen around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in Bisichi Village.
“Two of the victims were from Bwara and one from Kakpwis in Foron District while three including a pregnant woman was from Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area,” he said.
However, the police spokesperson in the state, Felicia Anslem, when contacted denied any knowledge of the incident but said the police will conduct an investigation on the matter.
The council chairman, Mr. Loham, described the attack as “barbaric and sad,” noting that it came at a time when relative peace was gradually returning to the area.
Barkinladi and environs have experienced their fair share of insecurity since the civil unrest started in Plateau State more than12 years ago.
Mr. Loham appealed to residents of the area to remain calm as security agencies are on the trail of the suspects. He, however, pointed an accusing finger at Fulani herdsmen in the area.
The attack came a few days after a peace meeting among ethnic groups from Plateau North on the way to permanent peace. Also a federal lawmaker representing Plateau North, Gyang Pwajok, recently concluded a tour of the six council areas including Barkinladi, where he praised the efforts of the authorities in maintaining peace.
