14 commissioners in the administration of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi have insisted that they remain members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite their expulsion from the party by the Felix Amechi Obuah-led executive in Rivers State.
Obuah, had at a press briefing on Monday in Port Harcourt, announced the expulsion of the 14 commissioners and four others, accusing them of engaging in anti-party activities, especially their refusal to appear before the party’s membership performance evaluation committee, which sat between August 22, and August 24, 2013.
But speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the commissioner for Works, Chief Victor Tombari Giadom, said it was only the national executive committee of the PDP that had the constitutional powers to expel public officers from the party.
Giadom said; “I think that the expulsion is unconstitutional and the national leadership of the party will not allow it to stand.
I see no reason why the kangaroo expulsion in Port Harcourt will stand because the provisions of the law and constitution are clear that only the national working committee can expel a public officer.
I don’t see why we should be bothered about that.
“We will take all necessary steps to ensure that we stand by the provisions of the law. You don’t expect something that is opposite the law to strive. Our expulsion will start and end at Aba Road (state PDP secretariat).”
