The deputy speaker of the state’s House of Assembly died August 15.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Jigawa has fixed September 21, for the by-election in Ringim Constituency of Jigawa to fill the vacuum created by the death of the late Deputy Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly, Sule Udi.
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Ibrahim Bagobiri, announced this when he met with representatives of political parties and security operatives in Dutse on the issue.
He said that the election would hold in 157 poling units in 11 centres of Ringim Local Government Area where the deceased hailed from.
The Commissioner called on political parties to adhere strictly to the constitutional provisions and party guidelines for the primaries and nominations of candidates for the poll.
He said, “Any political party wishing to present a candidate for election should first of all conduct its primaries to nominate such candidates.”
Mr. Bagobiri disclosed that one of the agreements reached at the meeting was that primary election would be conducted rather than using consensus to nominate candidates for the exercise.
He warned that using consensus to nominate candidates was illegal and unconstitutional, adding that any candidate nominated through consensus would be automatically disqualified by the commission.
Mr. Udi died in a car accident along Kani-Ringim road on August 15.
