Members of the Benue House of Assembly have condemned the killing of 18 people and the burning of houses by unknown gunmen in Ukum and Katsina-Ala local government areas of the state.
The legislators made the condemnation in a resolution at plenary on Tuesday in Makurdi following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Paul Biam.
In his motion, Mr. Biam informed the House that 18 people in his constituency were killed by gunmen on Monday.
He said that the gunmen attacked three villages – Agena, Angbaaye and Kusugh in Boikyo and Mbazum wards in Ukum Local Government Area.
Ianna Jato, the member representing Katsina-Ala East, confirmed the claims made by Mr. Biam and said the crisis also affected Mbajir Ward in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area.
The Deputy Speaker, Stephen Onmeje, who read the resolution, urged the state government to intervene in the matter to restore peace in the affected areas.
He also directed the commissioner of police to deploy policemen to patrol teams to the areas to avert re-occurrence of the crisis. He urged the police to ensure that the perpetrators of the act were brought to book.
Mr. Onmeje called on the chairmen of the local government areas to support security personnel to quell the crisis and restore peace in their areas.
In his contribution to the motion, the Minority Whip, Terkimbi Ikyange, appealed to the state government to create avenues where young people could be kept busy to take their minds from crime.
He blamed the high rate of crime in the society on unemployment and stressed the need to engage the youth to prevent them from getting involved in crime.
