There is nothing to signal the final parting of ways between Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha and All Progressives National Chairman Victor Umeh than last week’s declaration by Umeh that he was waiting for Okorocha to formally declare for APC before he would proceed to court to press for the governor’s seat to be declared vacant. But hasn’t Okorocha declared for APC already? While APGA crisis reigned, Okorocha and Umeh were together, and you all know the APGA governor then sponsoring the splinter group within the party and who saw to the emergence of Maxi Okwu as the party’s chairman at a kangaroo convention the other day in Awka. But the court has spoken on who the authentic chairman of APGA is and it’s Umeh. Umeh and Anambra State Governor Peter Obi have finally resolved their differences. They openly demonstrated their newfound love with Umeh kissing Obi on the cheeks in front of television cameras the other day.
Now, Obi and Umeh are pitted against Okorocha. The problem between Umeh and Governor Okorocha has always been on the matter of the opposition All Progressives National Congress. Okorocha believes in the APC merger (perhaps to re-oil his presidential ambition) and has led his faction of APGA to join the opposition coalition, Umeh believes in the sanctity of APGA. Last week’s threat coming from Umeh can be rankling.
The law is clear that an elected officer (though the constitution makes this provision in respect of the legislators) can defect from a party on whose platform he was elected, provided there is a crisis within that party. If Okorocha openly declares for APC now, is there a crisis in APGA? Hmmmm, the court sure has some adjudication to do.
