The PDP leaders met with Mr. Abubakar in his Abuja home.
Following last week’s registration of the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM, the North East Zonal Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, visited former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar in Abuja pleading with him not to dump the ruling party.
The zonal chapter of the party made the appeal at a meeting with Mr. Abubakar at his Abuja residence on Wednesday.
PDM was registered alongside Independent Democrats, ID, on Friday by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Mr. Abubakar, who hails from Adamawa State in the zone, is allegedly linked with PDM, a group founded by a former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, Shehu Yar’Adua.
Two days before the registration of the association as a party, the former vice president had admitted that his associates were planning to register a party, but that he was still a loyal member of the PDP.
The zonal chapter led by its chairman, Lawal Girgir, said at the meeting that the delegation came to identify with Mr. Abubakar and to seek his support on how to strengthen the ruling party in the zone.
He also said that the visit was aimed at finding solution to the problems confronting the party in the zone.
Mr. Girgir, a former senator, said that the poor financial position of the PDP in the North East zone had made it difficult for the party to operate.
He stressed that funding of the zonal chapter had become the bane of its progress and sought the intervention of Mr. Abubakar to uplift the zone both politically and economically.
In his response, Mr. Abubakar asked the PDP zonal leadership to embark on self cleansing and be fearless.
He advised the party leaders not to be intimidated so that the zone would benefit from the scheme of things.
The former vice president denied joining the PDM, saying he was still a member of the PDP.
The Zonal Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Al-Amin Muhammed, told journalists after the meeting that the delegation visited Mr. Abubakar because he was a major stakeholder in the zone.
“You know Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is one of our major stakeholders, the party zonal executive paid him a courtesy call as a sign of respect,” he said.
He also said that the zonal chapter was in support of Mr. Tukur, adding that it would try to bring all stakeholders together.
“You know Atiku is a PDP member, if he is not in PDP, I am telling you we would not have been here” he said.
