Abia has a fifth Acting Chief Judge in three years.
Gov. Theodore Orji of Abia on Wednesday swore-in Justice Stella Nwakanma, as the fifth acting Chief Judge of the state.
Ms. Nwakanma replaced Justice Shedrack Nwanosike, who was recently removed from office as acting Chief Judge on the orders of the National Judicial Commission (NJC), for alleged age falsification.
Speaking at the swearing-in at the government house, Umuahia, the governor urged the judiciary “to put its house in order’’ and resolve the issue of seniority for the emergence of a substantive chief judge.
He said the appointment of an acting CJ was in compliance with the provisions of the law, given that appointments of CJ’s were based on seniority.
“Since nature abhors a vacuum, l charge the bench to send me a memo on the most senior judge in the state for onward submission to the State Assembly for clearance,’’ Mr. Orji said.
In her response, Nwakanma promised to ensure that the judiciary continued to perform its statutory duties during her tenure and thanked the governor for his continued effort at transforming the state judiciary.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Ms. Nwakanma is the fifth consecutive acting Chief Judge in the state since the retirement of Justice Sunday Imo in December 2010.
