The leadership of the Urhobo National Youth Council (UNYC) has berated the Delta State Oil Mineral Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC) on what it termed as wrongful payment of a monthly N20million to the Urhobo Youth Council (UYC) on behalf of youths in the Urhobo Nation.
Briefing newsmen on the modalities of the payment, the UNYC national president, Comrade Monday Oyeghe posited that, such payment to a selected few under some form of political guise was not only illegal but is a gross form of shortchanging the average Urhobo youth.
According to the youth leader, “The commission pays N20million to youths of Urhobo nation just like other ethnicities on the board of the commission, as against the benefit of this money being felt by the average Urhobo youth, some persons under the aegis of UYC, collect this money acting as a representative of Urhobo youths, and share it among themselves to the detriment of the Urhobo youths.
“At the end of 2012, DESOPADEC and NDDC both paid N5million each as end of year package to Urhobo youths and the leadership of UYC headed by Henry Baro and Jaro Egbo after collecting the money disbursed it to their cronies. For the DESOPADEC N5million, Blessing Ovwata of the Ighele Youth Wing of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) collected N500, 000 while the HOSTCOM youth president, Comrade Lucky Sorhue who had earlier rejected N500, 000 following a resolve that, the leadership of UYC has no right in disbursing money collected on behalf of the Urhobo nation later accepted a total of N2million.
“I am appealing to the State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan to as a matter of urgency look into this payment to a selected few by doing what is right. He should relate with the DESOPADEC commissioners on modalities of this payment which should be paid directly to the youth presidents of the 24 Urhobo kingdoms on behalf of the kingdoms, because the era of sharing of monies meant for Urhobo youths is over with the emergence of a new year,” he added.
When Blessing Ovwata was called on the phone to comment on the allegation that he participated in the sharing of the money following his collection of N500, 000, he said, “Such statement is untrue and false” while the leadership of the HOSTCOM youth simply declined commenting on the issue and refused replying SMS sent to him.
All attempts to speak with the commissioner representing Ughelli North and Ethiope East, Ominimini Chris Obiuwevbi on the board of the commission proved abortive as he refused replying text messages sent to him as well.
