Armed Bandits Take Over Birnin Gwari, Emir Cries Out
The Emir of Birnin Gwari, Alhaji Zubairu Jibril II in Kaduna State has cried out for government’s assistance as armed bandits appear to have taken over his emirate.
On a courtesy visit to Governor Ramalan Yero at Kaduna Government House yesterday the emir to the governor that his community was no longer at easy with the incessant criminal activities of armed bandits.
According to him, unless the state government takes a drastic step towards arresting the situation, it will come to a point where the villagers will be forced to abandon the community as the armed bandits now dictate the order of activities in the emirate council.
Alhaji Jibril, who led traditional and political leaders in the area on a courtesy call to the state governor at Sir Kashim House, urged the governor to rescue the people of the area from the clutches of armed bandits.
The Emir said the bandits would go from house to house to rob villagers, kill, maim and rape their female victims at will and at anytime of the day.
“We are disturbed, because as I talk to you now, neither the governor nor I are in charge of security in some of the villages in Birnin Gwari; these bandits are in charge. The armed bandits have taken over our land.
“They dictate what goes on in the villages under their territory. They move around with their weapons in broad daylight even in the market with nobody to challenge them. The only town they are yet to penetrate is Birnin Gwari town. So we hope the governor will come to our rescue,” he said.
The emir listed about seven villages that are currently under the control of the bandits. They include Kuyallo, Damari, Kazaga, Tsamari among others.
“So far, the bandits have stolen about seven thousand cattle belonging to the villagers and nothing has been done about it. Our people are worried; the government promised to secure the area from these bandits but we are still waiting for government’s intervention,” he said.
Alhaji Zubairu Jibril also called on the state government to repair the only dam in Birnin Gwari so as to provide water to the area.
In his remarks, Governor Yero said it was the responsibility of the three states that share boundaries with Birnin Gwari to tackle the insecurity problems affecting the area.

“The three states are Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara states. So it is the responsibility of the government of these three states to sit down and fashion out ways to tackle this problem of armed bandits,” he said.
The governor, however, assured the Emir that his administration would do everything humanly possible to assist the community, calling on the Emir to enjoin his subjects to pray to God for a lasting solution.
