Urhobo House Asaba, a laudable initiative – Utuama

The decision of Urhobo progress Union (UPU) Asaba to build an edifice to be called Urhobo House in Asaba, the Delta State Capital has been described as a laudable initiative that will go along way in not only promoting the socio-cultural heritage of the Urhobo but will also and most importantly promote mutual understanding between the Urhobo and other ethnic groups in the state.
Deputy Governor of Delta State, Prof. Amos Agbe Utuama stated this Saturday during the launching of N150, 000,000.00 appeal fund for the building of an ultra-modern Urhobo Cultural/Event Centre in Asaba.
Prof. Utuama who charged the Urhobo to reach out to other ethnic groups in order to get to their destination, also lauded the decision of UPU Asaba Branch over their well thought out decision to honour some of their illustrious sons of the branch for contributing immensely towards the growth and development of the branch in particular and the Urhobo nation in general.
He urged UPU Asaba Branch to use the forum to stamp out the menace of kidnapping and other social vices in society for a safer and secure environment that will in turn breed development.
The Deputy Governor who condemned in strong terms a trend where youth now clamour and forcefully want to lead where there are elders, described the development as strange and dangerous, calling for an immediate reversal in favour of age long and time tested tradition where elders lead the people with the support of the youth.
In his keynote address, the President-General of UPU, Major General Patrick Aziza (rtd) declared that the Urhobo nation is currently undergoing a transition, noting that in the next ten years the Urhobo will take over the South -South geo-political zone of the country.
Chief Aziza who was represented by Chief Gabriel Ofotokun thanked the UPU Asaba a branch for the novel initiative which he said will go a long way in making the learning of the Urhobo language much more easier.
The President UPU Asaba Branch, Dr. Ewhubare Benedict Aloku in his welcome address thanked Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan for making the dream of Urhobo House in Asaba a reality for his approval of a parcel of land for the project.
Dr. Aloku who called on all well meaning Urhobo sons and daughters and all lovers of Urhobos to donate generously towards the project assured that every kobo donated will be judiciously utilized and accounted for.
The Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Evangelist Isaac Gbigbidje in his address said the objectives of the Urhobo House in Asaba is to among others unite Urhobo in Asaba and environs, to have a place of assembly for the Urhobos, to uphold and teach Urhobo culture and language and for recreation and entertainment.
Other dignitaries that graced the colourful occasion aside the Deputy Governor are; Chief Ighoyota Amori, Hon Christian Onogba, Barr. Chike Ogeah, Dr. Rukevwe Ogwumba, Chief Willie Oki (represented by Chief Alex Imara) and others.
The likes of Sir E.P Ogagifo, Mr. O.P Origbo, Sir Paul Evuarherhe, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, Comrade Mike Okeme and others were awarded the UPU Asaba prestigious Achievement Award while His Royal Majesty, Onajite Igere Adjara, the Ovie of Ogor gave the event a well deserved royal touch.
