Nigeria has failed —Oby Ezekwesili
A former Minister of Education and former World Bank Vice President for African Region, Oby Ezekwesili, has said Nigeria has failed the children of the poor in the country.
She said this was manifested in the “dynasty of poverty” and high number of out-of-school children in the country.
She spoke on Sunday in Abuja, at her 50th birthday anniversary held at the International Conference Centre.
“There are so many children of the poor that this nation has failed and there is no reason why this nation should fail them.
“As Minister of Education, I understood that. Because when I saw the depth of the problems in the education sector, I knew that it was not something that even the most willing government could tackle alone.
“That is why as minister, based on the analysis that we have done, we began to present options. One of those options became community participation and we began to talk about ‘Adopt a School’. And we began to talk about public private partnership in Education,” she said.
Ezekwesili, who noted that access to quality education was important in any society, said Nigeria was sitting on a time bomb if nothing was done to address the crisis in education sector.
She noted that there was urgent need to join hands to save the country from the impending doom of growing angry and disenchanted youths.
“You and I must save our country from looming danger of growing disaffected, disenchanted angry young people, which we already have a colony of them,” she said.
