My Pikin: A’Court dismisses convicts’ bail request

JULY 19, 2013

My Pikin
The  Court of Appeal in Lagos on Thursday dismissed a bail application filed by two men convicted for the sale of adulterated teething mixture, My Pikin, which killed about 80 children in 2008.
Adeyemo Abiodun and Ebele Eromosele had prayed the appellate court to grant them bail pending the determination of their substantive appeal against the judgment of the Federal High Court, Lagos which sentenced them to seven years imprisonment each.
They were employees of Barewa Pharmaceutical Company Limited, which Justice Okechukwu Okeke (now retired), had ordered to be forfeited to the Federal Government following its conviction along with the two men.
The company’s Managing Director, Mr. Kola Okunlola, died before the trial was concluded.
In its ruling on the bail application read by Justice Fatima Akinbami, the  appellate court held that the convicts failed to disclose any special or exceptional circumstance to warrant the bail.
The court held that the contention of the appellants’ counsel,  Mr. Osaro Eghobamien (SAN), that one of his clients was suffering from glaucoma and hypertension had no merit.
