Niger Assembly denies N70m bribe to impeach Aliyu
JUNE 5, 2013

Niger State Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu
THE Niger State House of Assembly on Tuesday described as false reports that each of its 20 members had been induced with N70m to impeach Governor Babangida Aliyu.
Reacting to media reports on the alleged plan by some highly-placed individuals to infiltrate the Assembly, Speaker, Mr. Adamu Usman, said the members could not collect “poisoned money” from any quarter to commence impeachment proceedings against the governor.
The Speaker said, “As far as we are concerned, we have not been approached individually or collectively to impeach the governor or given any N70m to move against the governor.”
Addressing newsmen shortly after an executive session held behind closed doors, Usman said the state legilators were not ready to compromise their integrity for financial gains.
“As Speaker, I am saying it loud and clear that there is nothing like that; we can’t collect poisoned money in order to soil our name,” he said.
Usman warned politicians that were jostling for space ahead of the 2015 general elections to desist from dragging the Assembly’s name in the mud.
“The politics of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum or Northern Governors’ Forum does not concern us, we don’t oversee them. We should not be dragged into it at all; we have not received any complaint against the governor,” he said.
The Speaker assured the people of the state that the Assembly and the executive would continue to collaborate in order to collectively provide more dividends of democracy to the electorate.
On the purported meeting held in the Zone ‘A’ Senatorial district by former Minister of Information and member, PDP Board of Trustees, Prof. Jerry Gana, Usman said no member of the Assembly was invited, especially those from the district.
He said, “As a major stakeholder from the Zone and the entire state, I was not approached in formal or informal about such plot.
“As far as the House is concerned the governor is performing. MDAs has just submitted their quarterly budget implementation report and it shows very impressive figures.”
“As a lawyer, I know that the process of impeaching a governor is not something that someone will sit somewhere by way of imagination, thinking that you will just remove a governor like removing a fly on your head.”
According to him, those behind the imaginary plot were out to sow the seed of discord between the legislative arm and the executive “because the governor is living up to the expectation of the people of the state and the Assembly.”
