Maitama Sule dissociates self from Akwa Ibom summit
The northern leader said he was not consulted on the summit.
The convener of the Northern Elders Forum, Maitama Sule, has dissociated himself from a meeting of leaders of thought of the six geo political zones of Nigeria, to be held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, next week.
A statement from the secretariat of NEF and signed by its spokesperson, Ango Abdullahi, on Thursday said the Dan Masanin Kano is unaware of the summit being organised by the Akwa Ibom Summit of the Project Nigeria-National Consensus Group.
The statement said NEF is “particularly concerned that the group is parading the name of the Danmasanin Kano, Dr Yusuf Maitama Sule, convener of the Northern Elders Forum, as one of the leaders of delegations that will spearhead discussions at the purported confab, and even portraying him as one of the conveners of the summit.”
“We are concerned because first, the Danmasanin Kano is not only unaware of such confab but was at no time even intimated about it neither is he a party to its organisation nor has he ever endorsed any invitation to anybody to that effect,” the statement said.
Private discussion
The statement also said Mr. Sule had five months ago held a meeting with Professor Ben Nwabuize in Lagos where national issues were discussed including a similar issue brought up by Mr. Nwabueze and which the Danmasani saw as noble.
It added, however, that since then, “neither Professor Nwabuize nor any other person had contacted him by whatever means on the issue or any related matter that might have given rise to the announcement of the purported Akwa Ibom summit.
On his part, he also said he had not mentioned the issue or any similar matter to anyone nor discussed it with any northern elder or group.
“More importantly, the Danmasani believes that if a summit of such magnitude were to be arranged, it should be more properly scheduled for the Federal Capital, Abuja and not in Akwa Ibom to give it a certain political undertone” the statement added.

Mr. Sule has, therefore, pulled out of the summit.
“The Danmasani hereby categorically distances himself from the organization of the Akwa Ibom summit and dissociates himself from its conduct and eventual outcome.
“The Danmasani also frowns at the use of his name as signatory to the invitations being circulated for the said confab” it said.
