Okorocha Resolves Traditional Leadership Tussles in Imo Communities
Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo has intervened and resolved the lingering traditional leadership tussles in some communities in the state. The contests had prevented the affected communities from producing their traditional rulers, known as `Eze’’ for many years.
Okorocha resolved some of the tussles on Friday in Owerri when he issued certificates of recognition and staff of office to successful ‘Ezes-elect’, including Eze George Ekeh of Ishi Ubomiri and Eze Ethelberth Ekwelibe of Irete, both in Mbaitolu Local Government Area.
He said that rancour arising from ‘traditional leadership tussles in different communities had hampered development efforts in the communities.
Okorocha said that the Community Government Councils could not thrive in an atmosphere of conflict since ``dispute is an evil wind that does no one any good.’’
For equity and peace to reign, he said that his administration would not allow the imposition of traditional rulers on communities and stressed that Igbo traditional rulers were chosen either by hereditary or election.
Okorocha solicited the cooperation of traditional rulers and urged the communities to allow peace to reign in their domains. He approved N5, 000 as fee for application forms for contestants for the position of ``Eze’’ and directed that communities that demanded and obtained one million naira from candidates should return same to the individuals.
He urged the Owerri and Orlu zonal council of traditional rulers to conduct fresh elections for some communities whose tussles were yet to be resolved.
