Amaechi’s victory will heal PDP — Senator

Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Magnus Abe
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Senator Magnus  Abe, has said the re-election of Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as the Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum provides  an “opportunity to unite” the Peoples Democratic Party.
Abe said this in a statement released in Abuja on Saturday.
According to the lawmaker, Amaechi’s victory over his colleague, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, was not only a victory for democracy and the rule of law, but also a victory for the PDP.
He said, “A keenly contested election has been won and lost. This is not the time for acrimony; this is the time to move forward and prepare for the arduous task of re-building our great party.
“Governor Amaechi’s re-election offers all genuine lovers of democracy and the PDP, in particular, an opportunity to heal the party and rally the party under the able leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan so that we can move forward.”
Abe explained that the party needed a strong and united PDP to successfully prosecute the 2015 general elections.
He said, “We cannot afford to go into the next elections with a fractured house. We need all lovers of democracy and those who genuinely love the party to, at this time, come together and unite so that we march into the next elections with a formidable team at all levels.”
Abe hailed Amaechi for his tenacity of purpose and courage in the face of daunting odds but urged him to see his re-election as “no victor, no vanquished, (and) a cooling balm that would help to heal the divisions in the party.”
