Vice President Namadi Sambo on Friday handed over the Benin Electricity Distribution Company to its new owner, Vigeo Power Ltd and pledged to create conducive environment for the core investor.
Sambo, who was represented at the occasion by Beks Dagogo-Jack, the Chairman, Presidential Taskforce on Power, said the handing over was in line with Federal Government’s commitment to restructure the power sector.
He described reforms in the sector as ``necessary tool for laying a solid foundation for sustainable power generation and service efficiency.
``Privatisation of the sector is a key component of the reform and one of the pre-conditions for the start-up of a competitive electricity market in Nigeria.’’
The vice president said that although the challenges facing the electricity sector in Nigeria were enormous, the opportunities that abound in the sector were also enormous.
He reiterated government’s commitment to create an enabling environment that would assist the new owners to provide quality service to electricity consumers within the zone.
Earlier, the Chairman of Vigeo Power Ltd., Victor Osibodu, commended the Federal Government for its transparency in handling the bidding process.
He assured consumers in the zone of quality service delivery and urged the Federal Government to ensure the payment of outstanding severance allowances to staff of the defunct PHCN.
The Benin Electricity Distribution zone comprises Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states.
