Kwara: Ahmed inaugurates new council chairmen

Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed
Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed on Monday swore in the newly elected 15 local government council chairmen in the state in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The chairman of the Offa Local Government Area had already been sworn in few months ago. The 15 council bosses were elected on October 26.
The governor urged the new council bosses to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate by providing quality leadership and enhancing the well being of the community and its people.
Ahmed also asked the chairmen to ensure that the citizens enjoyed equitable access to dividends of democracy, irrespective of gender, age, religious background or political affiliation.
He said, “Treat them fairly and justly, and pursue populist programmes, such as youth and women empowerment, educational development, and massive infrastructure intervention to enhance their living standard.
“Following our successful collaboration with local government councils in rural road construction, my administration intends to ensure greater partnerships with your councils in the areas of health, education, energy, water supply, youth empowerment, agriculture and the environment in order to enhance service delivery and guarantee impactful development.”
The governor reiterated his clamour for devolution of more powers to states and local councils, adding that the states and local governments were uniquely positioned to promote the well being of the masses in an effective and efficient manner.
“The Federal Government is therefore called upon to cede the responsibilities and resources for such critical sectors as agriculture, water supply, health, road construction and the environment to states and local governments while limiting itself to providing the right policy frameworks for these sectors.
“The successes witnessed in basic education under this framework can easily be translated to other sectors through constitutional synergy,” Ahmed said.
Meanwhile, the governor has donated 15 Hilux Pick Up vans to ‘Operation Harmony.’
‘Operation Harmony’ is a combined outfit of the Army, Police, State Security Service and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
