The Bayelsa State Police Command on Friday confirmed the abduction of the wife and son of Gbalipre Turner, the state treasurer of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by gunmen.

The Bayelsa police spokesperson, Alex Akhigbe, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said in Yenagoa that the kidnappers also abducted Mr. Turner’s son.
Mr. Akhigbe said that the incident occurred on Thursday at the family house in Opume, Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.
“I received information that the wife and son of the younger brother to King Turner were kidnapped yesterday by unidentified gunmen,” he said.
Mr. Akhigbe said that some police officers had been deployed to the creeks in the state, to trail the kidnappers.

”The kidnappers have not made any contact with the family; we are waiting for such contact to be established so that we can follow them up,” Mr. Akhigbe added.
The PDP chieftain is the younger brother of King Amalate Turner, the Obanemaof Opume Kingdom.
The 78-year-old Nelson Tempurah, the commissioner’s father, earlier abducted on Tuesday, is yet to be released.

Kidnapping has been on the rise in Bayelsa despite the passage of a law making kidnapping punishable with the death penalty.
