South-East/South-South Governors in the country have called on the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to consider the plight of Nigerian students by calling off the lingering industrial action.
In a communique after the South-East/South-South Governors meeting in Enugu read by Cross Rivers State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, the Governors called on ASUU to resolve impending issues through dialogue.
They said the decision of who would become the President of Nigeria in 2015 lies with the electorate in accordance with extant democratic tenets, and lauded Nigerians for supporting President Goodluck Jonathan in his determined drive to transforming Nigeria.
According to them: “We thank Nigerians for their continuous support for the administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who they elected overwhelmingly. We urge Mr. President to remain focus on governance and not to allow himself be distracted.
“We note that the determination of who will become the president of this country in 2015 would be made by the Nigerian electorate in line with democratic tenets and powers of the people should not be usurped by any group or individual."
They called for continuous dialogue in resolving issues national interest and pledged to strengthen economic ties between the zones, saying, “We call for continued dialogue at resolving national issues and the management of the security situation in the country to guarantee a continued corporate existence of great nation. The Governors of the South-South and the South –East Zones resolve to continue to strengthen economic ties between our states and to continue to pursue the development of the zones well as to prosecute the various infrastructure projects earlier identified.”
The Governors commended the security agencies for managing security challenges in the country and the Federal Government for massive reduction in crude oil theft.
The meeting was attended by Governors of Akwa Ibom, Chief Godswill Akpabio; Abia, Theodore Orji; Anambra, Peter Obi; Enugu, Sullivan Chime; Ebonyi, Martins Elechi; Delta, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan while Bayelsa Governor, Hon. Dickson Seriake was represented by his deputy.
