The Federal Road Safety Corps has warned Nigerians to be wary of “merriments” as the last two “ember” months of the year approach. The lead agency on road safety administration in the country wrote on its Facebook page that alcohol taking and illicit use of drugs, which some members of the motoring public describe as merriment, do more harm than good on the highways.
It therefore urged road users not to deliberately overlook traffic rules and regulations saying, “A driver is someone who reaches where he planned to go and returns home safely.”
The FRSC further wrote, “November and December are months’ a number of people call months of merriment. Merriment to some people is the number of alcoholic drinks and drugs they can take in a day and the numbers of beer parlous they can visit in a day.
“But here is information for this group of people: Never drive after consuming alcoholic drinks or while under the influence of drugs. Alcohol affects your vision and judgment. It reduces coordination and slows down reaction.
“It reduces driving stability even when taken below the legal limit, so do not drink and drive. Besides, the best protection inside the vehicle is the use of seat belt which, if properly used, reduces the severity of injuries by at 50 per cent in the event of accidents.”
