Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, on Monday met privately with vice-chancellors of the nation's public universities.
The meeting, which took place at the National Universities Commission building in Abuja, was called to discuss the four-month-old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Journalists were barred from observing the main meeting, as they were asked to leave the venue immediately after Wike gave his opening remarks.
Neither Wike nor the VCs agreed to speak with journalists after the meeting.
However, Daily Times learnt that the minister would meet with the ASUU leadership on Tuesday.
Unconfirmed reports said the Federal Government was considering shutting federal universities till February 2014 to enable it to sort out issues relating to the strike.
Wike had been quoted last week as saying that the issues behind the strike would be dealt with in a few months' time.
