A man believed to be an official of the Ogun State Vigilance Service, identified as Lawrence, has been arrested by the State Police Command on Tuesday for allegedly raping  an National Diploma I Banking and Finance student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Abeokuta.
The development led to protest by students of the school, who marched with placards registering their grievances to Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s office, Oke Mosan, and the Divisional Police Headquarters, Ibara.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the victim, whose name is being withheld, was returning from a meeting with her study group at about 10 p.m. on Monday, when, around Onikolobo, she was accosted by Mr. Lawrence.
He first confronted her for being out at that time of the night before forcing her to his hideout, where he raped her.
However, after the rape, the student raised an alarm which was heard by someone around the scene of the crime. It was the Good Samaritan who alerted the State Vigilance Service.
According to the Service Public Relations Officer, Soji Ganzallo, they raced to the scene, apprehended the suspect and later handed him over to the police at Ibara Division.
Mr. Gonzallo also denied that the suspect was a member of the service, saying that he was a night guard.
When PREMIUM TIMES visited the police station, the victim was about to be transported to the hospital for medical examination while the alleged rapist was writing out a statement.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Coordinator of Child Protection Network, CPN, Peju Osoba,  addressing the protesting students, condemned the incident and promised that justice would be served.
Ms. Osoba told PREMIUM TIMES that she had contacted the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta for an onward transfer of the case from Ibara Police Station to the Headquarters.
She promised that the State Government would be formally informed of the case and  legal action would be taken on behalf of the victim by the Network.
Several efforts to get in touch with the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, was unsuccessful.
