The robber, popularly known as Ogodogodo, is responsible for the deaths of more than 20 security officials.
A notorious armed robber, Adegoke Kasali, was, on Friday, arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ogun State Police Command at Obele, the boundary between Ogun and Cotonou, Benin.
Mr Kasali, who is allegedly the deputy of another notorious robber, Abiodun Egunjobi aka Godogodo, is said to have participated in killing of twenty seven security operatives including Ogun State Commander of Vehicles Inspection, Yomi Bamgbose.
Mr Kasali was paraded Monday at SARS Headquarters, Magbon, Abeokuta, with some other members of his gang who were identified as Kareem Mumuni (Baba Owo) and Lawal Waliu (Ijoba).
The robbers were known for terrorising states in the South West, including Kwara and Kogi States, since 2011.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, speaking to journalists, said, between 2011 and 2013, the gang killed no fewer than 21 policemen.
Mr Okoye added that a cache of arms and ammunition recovered from the gang included two AK 47 rifles, a Wealthier P22 pistol with 49 rounds of live ammunition, 55 live catridges, two cut-to-size double barrel guns, 100 rounds of live AK 47 ammunition, assorted charms and two packets of Lexomil tablets.
He also disclosed that the gang’s female member, Kemi Adesanya aka Special, was receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the shoot-out with the police.
Mr Okoye stated that the gang had confessed to killing the former South West Coordinator and Ogun State Commander of Vehicle Inspection Officers, Yomi Bamgbose, in 2011, as well as five policemen attached to the Quick Response Squad at Ijemo Agbadu and Mowe/Ibafo, a year ago.
“The gang has killed eleven policemen in Kwara and Lagos States. The gang was also responsible for the death of five policemen during an attack on a bullion van in Imeko in September 2011, as well as four members of the Ogun State Vigilante Service and three filling station attendants in Ifo, last June,” Mr. Okoye revealed.
He also said that the suspects allegedly snatched a Range Rover Sports from popular Fuji musician, Wasiu Alabi (Pasuma), last August along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The Commissioner also disclosed how Mr. Kasali was captured.
“Kasali, who was injured in a shoot -out with the police, was arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad led by the Officer-in-Charge, Mohammed Tijani in the Obele area along the borders between Nigeria and Benin Republic. He then led the SARS team to the hide-out of the other members of his gang in Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos State.
“On reaching there, his gang members opened fire which was replied by the police. Three of the robbers were killed, three others were arrested, while the others escaped. Efforts are on to arrest the ones who escaped. The lady amongst them is the most deadly. She was the one shooting at the SARS men,” Mr. Okoye said.
Mr. Kasali, who also spoke to journalists, said that he had personally killed no fewer than seven policemen. He regretted his involvement in crime.
“This is the work of the devil. I cannot fathom why I’m an armed robber. It’s beyond my comprehension. I’ve lost count of the policemen I’ve killed but they can’t be less than seven.
“I was also part of the gang that killed the four vigilante men and three petrol attendants in Ifo. That day, we operated with Godogodo. Godogodo was our boss and he hated seeing policemen,” he said.
He added that his gang killed two people at the Baptist Church in Sango Ota and advised those still engaged in armed robbery to give it up.
“I’ve been in this job for the past seven years,” he said.
In a related development, the command had earlier paraded five members of a highway robbery syndicate, which specialised in waylaying trucks loaded with goods.
The robbers were Sola Bamigbade, Abidemi Tajudeen, Kehinde Oguntade, Aliu Hamzat and Joseph Ebenezer.
They were arrested for robbing a cable wire dealer of goods worth N25million last week at Ogere along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.
