Joseph Mbu continues to hold office as the Rivers Commissioner of Police.
For the second time in two months, the Nigeria Police boss, Mohammed Abubakar, redeployed senior police officers across the country, but left out the controversial Rivers Police Commissioner, Joseph Mbu.
The Inspector General of Police, Monday, ordered the immediate redeployment of 61 senior police officers. An earlier redeployment was done on August 19.
Despite the call by the state governor, opposition parties, and even some Peoples Democratic Party Governors for Mr. Mbu’s redeployment, he has managed to retain his position.
The police commissioner has been accused of meddling in the political affairs in Rivers State, and taking sides with the opponents of Governor Rotimi Amaechi in the state. He has, however, always maintained that he’s acted professionally and has accused Mr. Amaechi of being a dictator.
According to a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, Monday’s redeployment by Mr. Abubakar is part of measures by the Force to ensure effectiveness in the fight against crime.
Those affected by the redeployment exercise are six Commissioners of Police (CPs), 26 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), and 29 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs).
This follows a recent approval of promotion of 39 senior officers, some on September 27, by the Police Service Commission following Mr. Abubakar’s recommendation. Four CPs were promoted to AIGs, eight DCPs to substantive Commissioners of Police, seven ACPs to DCPs, and 20 CSPs to ACPs.
Among the newly promoted AIGs is former CP Anambra State Police Command, Balla Nasarawa; acting AIG in-charge of Zone 12 Bauchi, Edgar Nanakumo; former CP Federal Special Anti- Robbery Squad, SARS, Mohammed Gana; and acting AIG in-charge, Border Patrol, Sabo Ibrahim.
Mr. Abubakar, congratulating affected officers, commended their commitment and sacrifice; and enjoined them to blaze the trail of providing quality leadership to their subordinate officers in consonance with the on-going reformation agenda of the Force.
He also said that the elevation of the officers was based on merit and they are therefore, expected to be more dutiful in carrying out the responsibilities of their new ranks.
A few of the redeployed officers include:
