A riot broke out on Thursday morning in the single cell area of Kuje Prison, Abuja over the refusal of the prison authorities to allow Boko Haram suspects and convicts to observe Eid-el-Fitri prayers.
Sources in the prison said trouble started when the prison authorities allowed three Lebanese suspects standing trial for terrorism to go for the prayers and kept the Boko Haram suspects and convicts back.
The Boko Haram inmates reacted angrily and attacked prison officials. They allegedly poured water on prison officials and shattered the entire cell windows.
They also cut off electricity and water pipes while prison officials fled to safety. A Boko Haram inmate serving a life sentence reportedly collapsed in the melee.
