Abacha created Nasarawa State in 1996.
Major Hamza Al-Mustapha on Friday said the agenda of Governor Umaru Al-Makura in Nasarawa state is in line with the dream of his former boss and late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, for creating of the state.
Mr. Al-Mustapha stated this when he paid a courtesy call on Mr. Al-Makura at the presidential lodge in Lafia, the state capital.
He said the creation of the state by his former boss was meant to bring development to the doorstep of the people through good governance, which the present administration in the state is currently making efforts to demonstrate.
Mr. Al-Mustapha was accompanied on the visit by his wife; fellow accused, Lateef Shofolahan; as well as Mohammed Abacha, son of Mr. Abacha, to thank the people of the state for their prayers and activism in demanding for his release from incarceration.
“Al-Makura’s political philosophy to make the common man feel like they are the governors is the major reason that gave birth to the state in 1996 by General Abacha,” Mr. Al-Mustapha said.
He commended the residents of the state for their agitations before the state was created.
Mr. Al-Makura, who received the guests alongside some members of his cabinet, said “the entire people of the state will forever remain grateful to late Gen Sani Abacha for finding them worthy to have a state of our own”.
He told Mr. Al-Mustapha that he should consider what happened to him as an act of God, and to forgive all those behind his long incarceration.
Mr. Al-Mustapha was the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to General Sani Abacha, Nigeria’s Head of State from November 1993 to June 1998.
After Mr. Abacha’s death, he was arrested and tried for murder and attempted murder of Kudirat Abiola, the wife of the acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election, Moshood Abiola.
On January 30, a Lagos High Court sitting at Igbosere convicted Mr. Al-Mustapha over the murder of Mrs. Abiola and sentenced him to death by hanging.
However, he was discharged and acquitted of the crime by the Court of Appeal, Lagos division, on Friday, July 12. The appellate court said there was no sufficient evidence to incriminate Mr. Al-Mustapha in the murder.
The verdict overturned that of the Lagos High Court which sentenced him to death by hanging.
