Anglican Church seeks capital punishment for rapists, others

JULY 3, 2013

Primate/Head of Anglican Church in Nigeria, The Most Revd Nicholas Okoh
Prelate of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop Nicholas Okoh, has called on the Federal Government to impose capital punishment on perpetrators of crimes, including rape and killing.
Okoh also advised young ladies to avoid indecent dressing and nudity in order to avoid people who lacked sexual self control.
The Prelate, at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday also counselled religious leaders to concentrate on the teaching of morality, instead of how to make money.
He said, “My church has not met to discuss the issue of capital punishment for rapists. But rape is becoming an embarrassing situation in this country and as religious leaders we must continue to react against deviant behaviour. We must continue to support marriage in order to build a decent society.
“There is the reported case of a family visited by armed robbers. They raped all the women, including the mother of the house. As if that was not enough, they choked bottle on her private part and killed her. Now, where is that woman’s human right? The armed robber has been executed. Yet, some people will be teaching us human rights. The Federal Government should not allow people to teach us morals and human rights. The law of capital punishment for those who rightly deserve it should stay.”
