Tempers frayed as Bayern hold Dortmund
MAY 5, 2013
Tempers frayed in what was essentially a Champions League final dress rehearsal on Saturday as Borussia Dortmund denied 10-man FC Bayern Munich their 15th straight Bundesliga win since the turn of the year as Germany’s top two teams played out a gritty 1-1 draw at the Signal Iduna Park.
In a highly entertaining prequel to the sides’ UEFA Champions League final meeting at Wembley Stadium in three weeks time, Dortmund’s Kevin Großkreutz opened the scoring with a stunning volley, with Mario Gomez levelling for Bayern shortly afterwards.
The home side had the better chances to win it after the break, not least when Robert Lewandowski was denied by Manuel Neuer from the penalty spot. Bayern played out the final 25 minutes a man short, after full back Rafinha was sent off fo a second bookable offence.
The two sides are bitter rivals and Mario Gotze’s planned move from Dortmund to their rivals was protested furiously by angry supporters who think he has betrayed them.
Fans burned Gotze shirts and produced banners and posters against him and they made their feelings known again on Saturday night.
Bayern have already been crowned German champions, winning the title in record time, so the game had little significance other than bragging rights and to whet the world’s appetite for their real showdown on May 25.
