RIVERS STATE UNDER SEIGE, POLICE LOCK DOWN OBIO AKPOR COUNCIL SECRETARIAT

The end seem not in sight in the intrigues and power play that have characterised Nigeria’s democracy of late. In what appears to be a gross violation of the principles of Federalism, the Obio Akpor Local Government Council was sacked in a commando styled invasion by police men led by the DPO of Rumuokoro in Obio Akpor Local Government Area on ‘Orders From Above’ supposedly from the Rivers State Police Commissioner.
According to eyewitnesses, the council staff were harassed and searched as they were ordered by the fierce looking police officers to vacate the Local Government Council immediately. No reason was given for the invasion. Calls made to the Police Command in Rivers State denied knowledge of the matter.
Obio Akpor local government area has been in the news since the suspension of the council by the Rivers State House of Assembly on allegations of corruption.
It is believed that the visit of the first lady to Rivers State on Thursday May 3, is not unconnected to the events. According to reports, the first lady declared the Caretaker Chairman of the Obio Akpor LGA illegal when she was being received by Local Government Chairmen at the Port Harcourt International airport upon her arrival.
Meanwhile residents of the state are becoming more apprehensive as the charged political climate may result in losing the peace enjoyed in the state. It is even a widely held view among political pundits in the state that the aim of Governor Amaechi’s political rivals is to heat up the polity to result in total breakdown of law and order which may necessitate a declaration of state of emergency by the President and legitimately get him out of office.
More updates shall follow as events unfold.
