Osun govt moves to tackle flooding

osun drainageTHE Osun State Ministry of Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development at the weekend, said it had begun the marking of structures within flood plains and road setbacks in Osogbo to prevent flooding.
The Commissioner in the ministry, Mr Muyiwa Ige, said this at a press briefing organised by the Ministry of Information and Strategy.
Ige said the ministry had marked all structures within 30 metres setback on Alekuwodo and Ogbaagba streams within the flood plain of Osogbo for separation.
“This is to prevent flooding in the area which can eventually lead to loss of lives and property.
Also, the structures within right-of-way on Olaiya/MDS Road, Osogbo, were marked for separation.
“The exercise is to allow for the expansion and improvement of existing roads for the benefit of people of Osogbo and entire parts of the state,” he added.
The commissioner also said that from January 12 to March, 25, 2013, stop work orders, 73 contravention notices and 16 seal orders were served on illegal structures and shops.
He warned encroachers into government land to desist from illegal occupation as government was determined to tackle this.
While he appealed to traditional rulers to help appeal to encroachers to stay away from GRAs, the commissioner said recalcitrant encroachers would be arrested and prosecuted.
Ige also explained that the state government had compensated those whose lands were taken over by government authorities.
