MAY 14, 2013

Police ended the long spell of carjacking allegedly committed by one Mr. Chijioke Donatus, 26, by arraigning him on Friday before Magistrate B.O Osunsanmi of Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Donatus, who lives at Igbese, Ikorodu, faces eight counts of conspiracy and armed robbery. Until he was arraigned, Donatus and others at large had allegedly stolen more than eight assorted cars.
The charges against him reads: “That you Chijoke Donatus and others at large in the month of November, 2012 at about 7pm at Ojodu, Lagos, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony, to wit: armed robbery and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 5(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special provisions) Act, laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2001.
“That you Donatus and others at large on the same time and date, while armed with guns and other dangerous weapons snatched a Toyota Corolla, registration number FST 291 AA, valued at N900,000 property of one Mr. Emeka John and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 1 (2) (a) (b) of Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act.”
The police prosecutor, Inspector Benson Emuerhi, said Donatus stole other cars: a Toyota Camry car, registration number EQ 241 EKY, value N1.2 million, property of Mr. Chukwudi Emmanuel; Honda ‘End of Discussion’ car, reg. number XA 774 FST, valued at N1.5m property of Mr. Adekunle Ishola; Spider Space car, reg. number AA 714 MUS, value N1.4m, owned by Mr. Akintunde Oluyemi; Honda ‘baby boy’ car, reg. number XA 347 LSD, valued at N700,000, which belongs to Mr. Moshood Salau; and a Toyota Camry car, reg. number AY 240 EKY, valued at N800, 000, originally possessed by Mr. Adeyemi Olaolu.
Emuerhi said the cars were stolen at gun point and at different locations within the Lagos Metropolis. He argued that given the severity of the defendant’s offences, he should be remanded in custody. Mr. Ohime Boniface was Donatus’ lawyer. The investigating police officer was Cpl. Gana Mohammed.
Magistrate Osunsanmi adjourned the case till July 4, 2013 pending the Director of Public Prosecutor’s advice.
