Akure village heads defy Deji’s deposition order

Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida
Village heads in the Akure North Local Government, Ondo State, who were sacked last week by the Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida, because their appointments were not ratified by the Deji-in-Council, said on Tuesday that the traditional ruler had no power to depose them.
The   monarchs, who vowed that they would remain on their various  thrones despite the deposition order given by the Deji-in-Council, also insisted that they were duly appointed by the prescribed authorities in the Akure North LG of the state.
They insisted that only the authorities of the council could depose them from the thrones of their forefathers.
Spokesperson for the embattled chiefs, who is also the Olu of Alayere, Prince Adeniran Aladetoyinbo, told journalists in Akure on Tuesday that “it is the person that appointed that can sack. We are not from Akure South but Akure North.”
Aladetoyinbo maintained that the prescribed authorities in Akure North included the Alayede Ogbese; Oloba of Oba-Ile; Okiti of Iju and Ogbolu of Ita-Ogbolu.
He added that the Deji, who is from Akure South LG, had no right to dictate to the prescribed authorities listed above.
He said, “The prescribed authorities have given the affected village heads, letter of recognition and only them can withdraw same.
“On paramountcy, it is the governor that is the consenting authority and the paramount ruler. He gives staff of office and instruments of power to any monarch.”
Oguntoyinbo said by the virtue of the land use decree of 1978, all lands belonged to the government and only it could revoke the certificate of occupancy and not any first class monarch.
He added, “If the Deji of Akure holds authority over Akure North, Ooni of Ife should lay claim to all Yorubaland including Akure because all of us migrated from Ile-Ife.”
Aladetoyinbo insisted that all the affected village heads would remain in their palaces in defiance of the order of the Deji of Akure, who they claimed had no right to dethrone them.
