Court dissolves 138 marriages in Ogun

The Abeokuta Customary Court II, sitting in Ake, on Thursday said that it dissolved 138 marriages in 2012. The President of the court, Titus Oluwole, said in Abeokuta that the court was, however, able to reconcile 111 couples within the period.
He said that the divorce cases recorded in 2012 were lower than the 254 cases recorded in 2011. Oluwole attributed the decrease to series of counselling, mediation between families and sensitisation given to intending couples by religious groups before wedding solemnisation.
"Before the court dissolves a marriage, we send them home for their families to mediate. We dissolve marriages only when we are left with no choice and all efforts to reconcile couples prove abortive," he said.
He advised couple to have sufficient knowledge about and be able to understand each other well in addition to seeking God's guidance before going into the institution of marriage.
"Most marriages crumble because of lack of understanding and not seeking God’s presence before getting married," the court president said and advised parents to give adequate guidance and counselling to their wards in addition to training them at their tender age.
