The Lagos Government has set up two committees for the task.
The Lagos State Government on Thursday said it had concluded arrangements to carry out the grading and classification of hotels and tourism establishments in the state.
Disun Holloway, the State Commissioner for Tourism and Inter-governmental Relations, said this in a statement made available to newsmen in Lagos. He said that the arrangement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting between representatives of government, operators of hotels and the management of tourism establishments.
“Lagos State Government has commenced plans to ensure that all hotels and hospitality outlets operating in the state are properly classified and graded.
“Government’s determination to register, classify and grade hotels is borne out of the desire to have a reliable database for planning, research and development of the sector, ’’ it said.
The statement advised associations, such as Hotels Personal Services and Employers Association (HOPESEA) and Hotels Association of Nigeria (HAN), to educate their members on the grading and classification processes.
The statement said that two committees had been set up by the state government to look at the modalities of carrying out the grading and classification processes.
“These committees are made up of experienced hospitality practitioners and would serve as oversight committees to the Hotel Licensing Authority.
“A consultant has been engaged to develop the criteria for determining the award of a star grade hotel or hospitality outlet,’’ it said.
The statement urged operators who had yet to comply with the Hotel Licensing Law (Amended) 2003, promulgated for the licensing, registration, grading and standardisation of hospitality and tourism outlets, to do so.
