Labour Party confirms ex-gov Daniel’s membership

AUGUST 16, 2013

Gbenga Daniel
The Labour Party in Ogun State on Thursday confirmed the membership of a former governor of the state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
The LP, which also declared Daniel as its “grand patron” in the state, said the former governor “is now a full-fledged member” of the party.
It further disclosed that the party’s stakeholders, including those who had recently defected from the defunct ruling Action Congress of Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party and the Peoples Party of Nigeria, would on Sunday meet with Daniel in his Asoludero Court residence in Sagamu.
The party, however, warned that it would not serve as a “dumping ground” for politicians that might fail primaries for the 2015 general elections in other political parties in the state.
The leaders of the party, including its State Chairman, Olabode Simeon, and its State Secretary, Sunday Oginni, flanked by the other party chiefs, said these at the end of the LP State Executive Committee meeting, convened in Abeokuta.
The meeting was to deliberate on the planned membership registration in the 236 wards in the state.
Oginni said the LP leadership approached Daniel and appointed him as the grand patron of the party because of his wealth of experience and antecedents in the political history of the state.
He added that since the former governor remained a “potent force” to reckon with in the politics of the state, any political party interested in winning elections must align with him.
The LP secretary said, “We want to say it categorically that we, on this high table, the executives of the LP, approached Otunba Gbenga Daniel as a social democrat, to be our grand patron. This is not about political affiliation. He was a governor of Ogun State for good eight years for God’s sake, and most of his programmes reflected social democracy. As a matter of fact, we approached him, and I want to confirm to you that he has accepted to be the grand patron of the Labour Party in Ogun State.
“Nearly all the political parties in Ogun State have decided to join the Labour Party – The CPC is already in extinction. If the juggernaut in the PDP, the leading light of the PDP, like Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has decided to join the Labour Party, that means the remnant of the PDP in the state are already in the mortuary, embalmed and ready to be buried. Their burial is coming up on May 29, 2015.”
LP Chairman in the state, Simeon, urged members of the party to participate in the ongoing registration exercise, especially at the ward level, in order to provide a credible alternative to the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic party.
