Nigerian Referee For Confederations Cup Finals
Few days after his name was announced as one of the selected few to officiate at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup set to take place in June, Peter Edibe who will become the first Nigerian to be accorded that honour believes this will open the flood gate of successes for match officials in the country.
In an exclusive interview with Goal.com, Edibe who has also been tipped to take part in the 2014 FIFA World Cup believes his meteoric rise is down to hard work and consistency.
“I felt very happy on the announcement of my selection to [officiate] at the Confederations Cup, which also coincided with the news of my father’s death. I will say I am not surprised because I have long expected it having worked towards it tirelessly,” Edibe said.
“I have never fallen short of Nigeria’s expectations having represented them at the just concluded Nations Cup amidst other international outings. I feel it’s a call to work harder so as to give my best like I have always done. As an ambassador of Nigeria, I want to prove that Nigerians are very good,” he added.
When asked what impact his feat would have on young referees in Nigeria, he said affirmatively: “I represent the rock. You know what the rock means in line with the biblical Peter? He was the foundation.
“Now that God has destined that I go there first, I represent the rock which is a very solid one for the generation yet unborn.
I will enjoin the younger referees to follow my footsteps of building on the foundation . With this, we will go places,” concluded Edibe with a smile.
