Jonathan, Tambuwal, Amosun, Others Eulogise Oluwole Awolowo
The remains of Chief Oluwole Bolade Awolowo, son of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was yesterday interred at his home town, Ikenne-Remo amidst wailing.
The funeral ceremony, which began at the Saviour’s Anglican Church where the deceased worshipped till his transition, was attended by prominent men and women in the country.
Those in attendance included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Aminu Tambuwal, minister of information, Mr Labaran Maku, who led the five-man federal government delegation to the event, Ambassador Gbenga Ashiru, minister of foreign affairs, Dr Reuben Abati, special adviser (Media) to President Goodluck Jonathan, and Mrs Jumoke Akinjide, minister of state, Federal Capital Territory(FCT).
Also in attendance were Governors Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Senator Ibikunle Amosun(Ogun) and Rauf Aregbesola (Osun). Former governors of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba and Otunba Gbenga Daniel and former governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola were also there. Publisher of ThisDay Newspapers, Nduka Obaigbena and Senator OluremiTinubu were also present at the burial ceremony.
Oluwole died on March 27 at Wellington Hospital, London at the age of 70.
Those who paid tribute to the deceased described him as a humble and selfless Nigerian who positively touched the lives of many, especially the poor. He was the publisher of the Nigerian Tribune.
Bishop of the Remo Diocese of the Anglican Church, Rt. Rev. Olusina Fape, in his sermon stated, “Regrettably, those who have destroyed our economy and turned politics to an arena of theatre and bloodletting will suddenly become heroes at death. Those who have instituted corruption and fuelled terrorism and political crises are the ones that will want to be celebrated. Which way Nigerians?”
