Group accuses Kano of complicity over bus bombing

Burnt luxury buses lie in the parling area at New Road bus station in Sabon Gari area of Kano.
International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law has accused the Kano State Government of complicity in last month’s bus bombing in Kano that claimed the lives of dozens of people in vehicles waiting to travel to the south-eastern part of the country.
In a statement in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Monday, the organisation said the Kano State Government and the state police command betrayed their complicity in the bombing by attempting to play down on the severity of the incident.
The statement by the Chairman of Intersociety’s Board of Trustees and the head of its information desk, Mr. Emeka Umeagbalasi and Mr. Justus Ijeoma respectively, called for the invitation of the International Crimes Commission to investigate the killings in Nigeria.
It said the police had claimed that the casualty figure was less than 22, when actually there were over 200 people that were killed in the buses that were all loaded with people travelling to southern Nigeria.
“The modern luxury buses, which contained 59 properly seated passengers each, excluding ‘attachments,’ were South-West, South-East and South-South bound buses. The five buses were burnt beyond recognition.
“The Park, which is located in the heart of the Igbo controlled area of Kano State, called Sabon Gari, also had at the time of the deadly bomb attacks, other passengers, both those embarking on, and disembarking from journeys, as well as hawkers, park workers and passerby,” Intersociety said.
It alleged that there had been established state-backed animosity against the Christian population in Kano.
