Fire guts INEC headquarters

inecFOR the second time in the year, the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was yesterday gutted by fire which destroyed some of its equipment and vital documents.
The fire, which started at the commission’s legal department located on the second floor of the INEC building, destroyed many files and documents, especially in the office of the director, Legal Services.
Although the real cause of the fire was not established at the time of filing this report, The Guardian gathered from inside sources that it might be due to the usual power surge in the affected building.
In January, the same building was gutted by fire when the office of the Director of Voter Registry at the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) Commission was completely devastated.
Confirming the incident to The Guardian yesterday in Abuja, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu, simply noted that the inferno had been put under control by men and officers of the Abuja Fire Services who quickly intervened to avert further damage.
