Blackberry Profit Hits $94m
Canadian phone maker, Blackberry announced its fourth quarter financials revealing that it has so far sold one million Blackberry Z10 smartphones.
Blackberry’s financial results were a bit of a mixed bag. It posted a $94millon profit for the fourth quarter, up from third quarter profits of just $14million, but said its customer base had shrunk by three million during the three- month period.
The company revealed that it shipped one million Blackberry Z10 handsets in the three weeks that it was available in the quarter. When you consider that Apple sold five million iPhone 5s in just a few days, Blackberry is a long way off, but it’s certainly not a bad start for the company’s Blackberry 10 push.
In addition, Blackberry said that it shipped five million of its older smartphones during the quarter, along with 370,000 Blackberry Playbook tablets. Typically, Wall Street analysts had expected more from the company, predicting 6.95 million mobile phone sales with 1.1 million of them Blackberry 10 devices. Still, with six million handsets shipped in total, Blackberry wasn’t far off.
Blackberry CEO, Thorstein Heins, said: “With the launch of Blackberry 10, we have introduced the newest and what we believe to be the most innovative mobile computing platform in the market today. Customers love the device and the user experience, and our teams and partners are now focused on getting those devices into the hands of Blackberry consumer and enterprise customers.”
