UN Seeks More Emergency Aid For Philippine Typhoon Victims

The UN on Friday requested more emergency aid for nearly a million people who lost their homes and livelihoods in the strongest typhoon that hit the Philippines last year.
The UN says 76 million dollars is needed to provide live-saving assistance and recovery support to more than 920,000 people in the coming six months.
The amount is 17 per cent higher than the initial appeal for 65 million dollars in December when Typhoon Bopha slammed into the southern Philippines, triggering massive floods and landslides.
To date, 27 million dollars have been contributed towards the appeal fund, leaving a funding gap of 48 million dollars, UN Humanitarian Coordinator Luiza Carvalho said.
``The funding and resources we have at present are not commensurate with the needs that we must meet,’’ she said.
``The need for support in the coming months is critical,’’ she said.
``Major humanitarian needs include shelter, early recovery and livelihoods, food security and agriculture, and water, sanitation and hygiene.’’
Bopha killed 1,067 people and left 834 missing and feared dead.
More than 210,000 houses were destroyed, displacing 973,000 people into tents and temporary shelters made from debris and tarpaulins. (dpa/NAN)
