Soldiers gun down kidnap suspect in Delta on JANUARY 9, 2013 ·  Sapele— Soldiers of 19 Battalion, Nigerian Army Headquarters, Koko, Warri, Delta State, yesterday, shot dead, one kidnap suspect in the Okurighrwe axis of Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area. The victims, a  mother the two children, told Vanguard that the suspect had pretended to be a commercial motorcycle rider, commonly called Okada, and had carried her with her two children, aged three and five years, from Igbeku, Sapele to Okurighrwe Junction, in the outskirts of Sapele. She said that before she boarded the Okada, her children had notified the suspect that she had N500 note and had no N100 note, which was the fare, while he (Okada man) accepted. On getting to Okurighrwe Junction, she gave the suspect the N500 note with the view of getting her balance of N400, only to be told that he had none and that she must leave her two children to change the money to smaller denominations from traders in the area. *Soldiers on patrol According to her, while she was making effort to get small denomination, the suspect zoomed off with her two kids. She raised alarm which attracted sympathizers, who gave the suspect a hot chase to no avail, adding that one of the sympathizers made a Save Our Soul call to the soldiers, who showed up and trailed the suspect. The Army Commander, Major Aminu Mohammed, who led the soldiers, told newsmen that it was the second of such incident in the area in recent times, adding that the suspect ran into the bush on seeing the soldiers, where he was felled by his men during an exchange of gun fire, after which the kids were rescued. Meanwhile, youths in Okurighrwe, yesterday, protested the existence of commercial motorcycles in Sapele and environs, saying it had led to an increase in crime in the area.
