Okorocha Advises NANS On Need For Credible Leadership

Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo has advised the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to enthrone a credible leadership to make it more formidable and relevant.
Okorocha gave the advice on Thursday when a delegation of the association paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Owerri.
He said the NANS used to be a factor of change and a force to reckon with in the country because of the credibility of its leadership.
The governor regretted that NANS had not harnessed its potentials in the recent years.
He said leadership problems had bedeviled the association, making it not to live up to expectations.
Okorocha urged the current leadership of NANS to repackage the association so that the country could make the best out of its existence.
He said the association had in the recent past been led by people who were obsessed about what they would get out of governance instead of what they could put into it.
The governor stressed the need for NANS to identify with issues of development in the society to make it better and more relevant.
He, however, thanked the association for the proposed life membership of NANS award to be given to him next month, and announced the donation of two buses to the association to enhance its operations.
Okorocha also said he would cooperate with the association in its efforts to ensure qualitative learning environment for Nigerian students.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the NANS 27th Inaugural Lecture Committee, Mr Daniel Onjeh, said the purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the governor and the association.
Onjeh said the association was interested in leaders whose life impacted on the less privileged, commending the governor for his free education programme.
``You are a humble man who is exceptional in whatever he lays his hands on,” he said.
The chairman said it was on the premise of his sterling qualities that the association decided to honor him with a life membership award.
Onjeh told the governor that the ceremony was slated for Feb. 14 at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, adding that President Goodluck Jonathan would be the second recipient.
He thanked the governor for donating a vehicle to the association in 2007.
Also speaking, the NANS President, Yinka Gbadebo, said the association was identifying with the governor because of his philanthropy and achievements in governance.
Gbadedo promised the governor of the students’ support in his endeavours.
