St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Ughelli in collaboration with the Justice Development and Peace group last weekend organized a seminar to create awareness on the evils of child and female trafficking.
Mr. Nduka Nwanwene of the National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons in a paper said, within eight years of the agency existence, it had recorded significant achievements in protecting, prosecuting and preventing human trafficking in all its ramifications and called on
all Nigerians to join hands to eradicate this modern day slavery of
human beings.
He said the agency was established to meet Nigeria’s international obligation on the convention against transnational organized crime and the supplementary protocol to prevent, suppress and punish trafficking in persons, especially women and children as well as address the huge
problems of human trafficking which had assumed an alarming and embarrassing point in Nigeria.
According to him, one of the most effective ways that human trafficking can be presented is through advocacy and sensitization of communities, as most trafficking cases take place in rural communities in Nigeria.
Mr. Nwanwene attributed this to the heat on traffickers in most of the cities, particularly in those places where the agency had registered its presence. “Haven been placed on the searchlight of the multi-disciplinary agency, most traffickers have shifted focus to rural communities to recruit their victims.
He said parents had significant role to play in the moral upbringing of children and urged them to show love and care for their children, rather than contributing to the climate of permissiveness.
Also in a paper, Sister Helem Eluagu of the Sisters of Charity, Ozoro called for the formation of cluster groups in parishes to discuss their commitment and action on the abolition of child abuse and human trafficking including the maltreatment of children, child labour and abuse of housemaid in families.
The occasion which was attended by a large audience, witnessed film shows on the evils of child and female trafficking. The Seminar was coordinated by Justice Emiakpo Emiaso
