ANPP Chieftain Drums Support For LG Fiscal Autonomy

A former ANPP gubernatorial candidate in Imo, Mr Benneth Lemchi, has described fiscal autonomy of local governments as the roadmap to rural development of the country.
Lemchi made the remark in an interview with the News agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Friday.
According to him, such autonomy will also empower individuals and various communities and improve the economy and politics of the councils.
``Rural electrification will be easily achieved in almost all Nigeria’s hinterlands, if local governments are allowed to control finances.
``Feeder roads will be constructed and maintained, at least, on quarterly basis by local councils that are independent,’’ Lemchi said.
He expressed optimism that the development would engender the concept of true power to the people.
Lemchi said that the ``arbitrariness of some state governors’’, over local governments had distorted the objectives for which the local governments were created.
He urged them to consider the plight of local government chairmen by ensuring that funds meant for them were delivered intact.
Lemchi appealed for massive support for the realisation of the autonomy to trigger unprecedented economic and political boom in the hinterlands. (NAN)
