Tension persists in Ekiti community

Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi
There was palpable tension in Ilupeju Ekiti on Monday following the crisis which erupted in the town on Friday as a result chieftaincy tussle.
Our correspondent, who visited the town, observed that gun-wielding riot policemen were stationed on the highway which links the town with Ikole while an armoured personnel carrier manned by policemen was stationed beside the road to prevent hoodlums from resuming hostilities.
Vehicles plying the highway were searched by the policemen. A police van with armed personnel was also stationed at the palace of the Apeju of Ilupeju, Oba Olaleye Oniyelu, while those going into the palace were properly screened.
The monarch, who addressed journalists in his palace, blamed one of his chiefs for the crisis. Oba Oniyelu denied imposing the new Olugbosun on the community.
Wives of the Oniyelu, the Onisan of Isan Ekiti, Oba Sunday Ajiboye, Ilupeju chiefs and head of Ebioba ruling house, Pa Michael Omooba, were present at the press conference.
Oniyelu explained that three ruling houses produced the Olugbosun – Ebioba, Ajagbile and Eniomoyun. He stated that he did not have any anointed candidate, adding that the Oye Traditional Council confirmed the new Olugbosun.
According to him, the Ebioba ruling house produced Mr. Kayode Ojo, but said another chief went and installed a parallel Olugbosu nbefore daybreak.
The monarch said the parallel Olugbosun danced to the palace with some youths and met him while holding a meeting with his chiefs. He said he was asked to bless the parallel Olugbosun, but he refused.
The monarch said, “Ebioba ruling house produced their candidate, Ojo, Emmanuel Kayode. He was confirmed by the Ifa Oracle. On June 13, 2013, I installed him and every rite was performed on him for seven days.
“But another person came to the palace on Friday and he and his people attacked the palace. They vandalised the palace and God saved me. I thank the police for their prompt intervention.
“This other person is an impostor. There can’t be two chiefs on the same stool at the same time. It is not possible, it has repercussion.”
The Onisan of Isan Ekiti described the attack on the palace of his Ilupeju counterpart as barbaric and uncalled for.
