Shonekan, Fashola urge revival of hard work, honesty
JUNE 26, 2013
Former Head of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan and Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola have urged Nigerians to urgently revive the socio-cultural values that defined the country in the past.
They said the values, such as hard work, diligence and honesty, could be the bases for the development of the country and they would also catapult the nation to an enviable height.
The two leaders spoke on Tuesday at the annual lecture of the Lagos State University Alumni, with the theme, ‘Good Governance: A tool for revitalisation of the socio-cultural values for social development,’ at the institution’s main campus in Ojo.
Shonekan, who was the chairman of the 21st annual lecture of the alumni, said kidnapping and the crises confronting the country were due to the erosion of socio-cultural values in the society.
He said, “Our nation’s present challenges are the manifestation of the debasement of values in the country.”
Fashola, who delivered the lecture titled, ‘Re-ordering our socio-cultural values as a tool for good governance and development,’ said only the restoration of values could enable good governance to thrive.
He said, “We must reclaim these values because they are strongly eroding away quickly. These values are some of the things that have made us essentially Africans. And we need to go back to some of them quickly.
“Decency and diligence, hard work, humility, integrity and honesty are some of the critical values that we must adhere to in the country.
“The place to start is the family. Our family is a true picture of government’s institution. If we succeed in many families, I am certain that we will extend it to governance at all levels in the country.”
